EDU 790 Week 8: Social Media and Students

2/28/18

Hello,

Today's blog focuses on the relationship between social media and students. I have chosen to read and write about a blog post from Sewickley Academy's Private School Blog. This blog is titled "9 Ways to use social Media in your Classroom." I really liked reading this blog post because it was short and to the point. It offered quick explanations for tools and how to use them in your classroom.  I love finding new tools to use, but the struggle is finding the time to experiment with them. Teachers need to find the time to not only acquire new tools, but to see if they will be beneficial to the learning of their students.

I also liked how this blog built up. It suggested that teachers start with getting themselves on social media.  The article then suggests joining Twitter or creating a Twitter hashtag for your students to use. It builds up from there to blogging, Tumblr, Skype and many others. After participating in this class and learning more about blogging, I have decided to blog with my class.  Our next unit is about hydraulic fracturing and I've been doing a mock Tweet activity. This year I want to blog for real with the students.  I also love the set up of the assessment tracker we used in this class. I'd love to make a copy of it and recreate if for my classes to keep track with their blogging and comments.

I definitely feel that social media has a place in the classroom. Teachers and students need to have the proper training and knowledge to use social media effectively. Something that stuck with me from the Sewickley Academy's Private School Blog is this quite;  "Chances are you give students writing assignments.  And chances are, you are the only one who reads them.  Yet we all know that one of the most effective motivators for strong writing is audience. Have students set up a blog and write for each other."  By giving ownership to the students, you then create a care and passion for the work.  With the proper guidelines, the students will have a much more meaningful experience while blogging than by fake Tweeting. I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks!
